• 2010.08.10 — Why does the psychological support program in the disaster area require at least 20 years? After the Wenchuan’s big earthquake, The Manager of the Chinese psychology faculty, The Director of the Chinese Psychology society Zhang Kan on behalf of the Chinese psychology center indicated that, the Wenchuan’s earthquake disaster has a long & profound effect in the area, the psychological support program requires at least 20 years. The "Tomorrow Program" follows the basic human principles, respecting the sponsored students. We helped students building self esteem, identified & praised their positive behavior and demonstrated the importance of self respect and the respect of others. With the co-ordination of the school, we provided them with the education of virtue & value of life. The students, parents and the schools recognized & appreciated our efforts. During our volunteers’ visits, all schools provided us with excellent support; school and student statistics were provided: (the no. of graduate students, no. of school transfers and no. of discontinued students etc.). The school also provided prompt feedback of our involvement, organized our discussion meetings with students during self study periods, and arranged teachers to accompany us to the family visits and so on. They provided us with a smooth & safe atmosphere for our journeys. The psychological assistance carried on for 10 years after the Great Hanshin\Kobe earthquake in Japan. The psychological healing time for the people in Wenchuan after the earthquake is a very long process. According the psychology specialist, no one knows the specific & the appropriate time for this kind of healings. We determined it will take 20 years. There are two reasons for our thoughts: firstly we think 20 years is a turnover point for a generation in human and secondly this is just to provide a concept of a long psychological healing period. Zhang Kan indicated that, the Sichuan provincial government started to realize and to pay full attention of the psychological assistance work in the disaster area, plans to set up the psychological support program in the entire network of the province. For this kind of support program, Zhang Kan pointed out that there are two ways to handle it. One is to establish the nationwide emergency psychological support team, prepares for the needs of the people after a disaster; second is to establish the psychological support program to cover the entire society network system. > Back to top |
